Heriot’s have announced their new coaching team for next season. Phil Smith is returning to Goldenacre as head coach and will benefit from regular assistance from Steve Lawrie who will help with the coaching of the forwards.

During the recent Premier B season, the club had initially asked Graham Marshall if he was available to stay on as coach, however, Marshall was unable to commit at that time and the club began to look for possible replacements. Marshall has since confirmed that due to work commitments, it would be really difficult for him to continue travelling from the Borders to Goldenacre and take the team forward in what will be an extremely competitive ten team Premier One. Backs coach Mark Appleson is also unavailable next season due to work and family commitments.

Heriot’s would like to thank Graham Marshall and Mark Appleson for their efforts during this season when they were instrumental in helping Heriot’s recover from a somewhat indifferent start and for ensuring Heriot’s retained their Premier One status.

Jim Craig
Club President

Boroughmuir 22 – 15 Heriot’s, 10 March 2012
RBS Edinburgh Cup Final

By John McCleary at Meggetland

Heriot’s took the field lacking a few first team regulars, including Alan Dymock, Jamie Parker and Fraser Brown.

Heriot’s started well, stealing at the line out and attacking in Boroughmuir’s half but not getting behind their defence. However we lost the ball and in Boroughmuir’s first attack we were found short out wide and conceded a try, which was duly converted 7-0.

There was a period of aerial bombardment without either side getting much in the way of an advantage. We managed to regain possession from the opposition but one good attacking move was stopped when Rory’ Carmichael’s kick ahead hit a Boroughmuir player and went into touch.

A good run from the back from Gregor Lawson led to a penalty which Colin Goudie kicked to the corner. The ball was moved wide in their 22 but was knocked on.

A kick ahead by Boroughmuir had Heriot’s retreating to our line, but Colin Goudie got back to save the position and won a penalty.

Early on we lost Gavin Cameron who was replaced by Johnson Stafford, Johnson making his first appearance for the first fifteen.

Graham Wilson was doing well disrupting their scrum, however from a scrum Boroughmuir got a penalty, which was kicked from about 40 yards. 10-0.

From a line out near their line, resulting from a penalty, the throw was taken by Ross Martin who took the chance and scored untouched. Graham missed the conversion 10-5.

From a good position we lost our line out ball, Boroughmuir passed along the line and their unmarked player went over, and then converted 17-5.

Although a few mistakes were still being made, from a penalty line out, a strong drive by the forwards saw Graham Wilson going over on the blind side. The conversion was not kicked 17-10.

A blooded Gregor Lawson went off to be replaced by Junior Bulumakau.

Half Time 17-10

Early in the second half we were getting into good positions, once being penalised in their 22.

Boroughmuir then, pressed for some time near our line trying to force their way over but our defence held out. Soon after Max managed to intercept a pass when a try looked on, against us. Shortly after, Boroughmuir were again laying siege to our line, but we managed to keep them out with some strong tackling. The pressure eventually told and they scored out wide 22-10.

Not giving up we got into their 22, and with a well-controlled driving maul got us over their line and Jason Hill touched down, but no extra points were taken 22-15.

We had one final scare from a scrum when one of their players ran about 50 yards, untouched, before Colin Goudie tackled him and prevented a try.

Boroughmuir conceded many penalties without the referee taking any further action.

Towards the end there was some impressive scrumming by us, generally the scrum and line out was good and Alex Spence again caught the eye.

Final score Boroughmuir 22, Heriots 15

Hawick 9 – 17 Heriot’s, 3 March 2012
RBS Premier B

By John McCleary at Mansfield Park

This was going to be one of the most important games for Heriot’s in a long time.

Both teams started brightly and early on Hawick kicked a penalty from about 40 yards with the wind. 3-0.

Initially Heriot’s had the edge in the scrum and took one against the head; however we lost Alan Dymock, to be replaced by J.P Ward.

After a driving maul by the forwards, Colin Goudie kicked to the corner but driving forward we lost the ball and Hawick cleared their lines. Then a kick for the loose ball cost us a penalty and Hawick moved swiftly into our half, the referee deemed we encroached, penalty Hawick 6, Heriot’s 0.

There were a number of occasions when we were in a good position, but were losing the ball to turnovers and at times when we needed quick ball, we were allowing their defence to get into position. Struan Cessford, Kevin Bryce and J.P. Ward were showing up well in attack.

While their player was sin binned we could not capitalise on our extra man. However, we had two excellent moves with Rory Carmichael and Max Learmonth prominent, with Andrew Scott and Gregor Lawson stopped at the Hawick line.

Fraser Brown limped off to be replaced by Alex Spence. In the last minutes of the first half Hawick laid siege to our line, and although Gregor Lawson was sin binned, we kept our composure and managed to repel their attempts to force their way over. Half Time Hawick 6 Heriot’s 0

With the wind at our backs and still down to 14, we quickly got onto the attack and spinning the ball wide, Andrew Scott glided past two defenders, untouched to score. Graham Wilson converted 6-7.

After Cammy Ferguson came on the field, a clever pass over the Hawick defence which might have led to a try was intercepted and the Hawick player ran about 50 yards before being hauled down by Max Learmonth and Colin Goudie, winning a penalty. Near the Heriot’s line Hawick gained a penalty 9-7.

Graham Wilson did an ‘up and under’ and Alex Spence caught the ball to keep the attack going. There were a few mistakes by both sides, with one attack ending when the ball was kicked dead, turnovers against Heriot’s continued. In spite of a problem at a scrum, we won a penalty which Graham kicked from 40 yards, 9-10.

Hawick were attacking in their own half without getting any penetration, when the ball was popped forward by them and snapped up by Max Learmonth, who ran about 40 yards to touch down with a former Heriot’s player trying to catch him. Graham Wilson converted from near the touch line.

Final score 9-17 and Premier One status is now in our own hands.
