Edinburgh Accies 22 Heriots 17 – 11 February 2012

By John McCleary

After two wins in the mini-league, without bonus points, we looked forward to this match after the convincing win in the cup.

Heriot’s started well with drive and pick up and spreading the ball wide, resulting in a penalty converted by Graham Wilson.

However, soon afterwards Jamie Sole for Accies ran 40 yards without being tackled, and soon we are 7-3 down.

Heriot’s were getting a regular supply of ball, taking the ball against the head a couple of times, also with counter rucking but possession was wasted by kicking the ball down the throats of the opposition, and penalties not finding touch. Also, up and unders were going too far so our players were not able to put pressure on the opposition catcher, enabling them to run back to us. The opposition were showing good continuity of play going wide and at the breakdown being able to secure possession. Whereas Heriot’s players were getting isolated and the move was breaking down.

With our drive and pick up game, Alan Dymock, Kevin Bryce, Fraser Brown and Jason Hill were having difficulty getting through the first line of defence.

The first two tries for Accies showed Heriot’s problems of defending their line with the opposition going through the phases of play.

Graham Wilson’s boot kept us in the game and when the score was 15-12 against us, we had a penalty to level the score, but for some reason kicked the ball to touch. Up to then we did not look like scoring tries. From the line out Accies pinched the ball and marched down the field, with some good passing, and scored under the posts.

It was then that Heriot’s came to life going through many phases of drive and pick up, eventually passing wide to score. Thereafter we seemed to raise the tempo and with a little bit of collective coolness and use of the backs we might have got something more from the game.

This Saturday, we once more make the short journey to Raeburn …
Read more »

This Saturday, we once more make the short journey to Raeburn Place to play Edinburgh Accies in our third RBS Premier B match, kicking off at 3:oopm. A repeat of the score line from last November when we beat Accies 05-38 in a cup match would obviously be welcome and again we appeal to our supporters to come out in numbers to give the boys that extra lift.

Last Saturday saw our first postponement of the season as the cup match against Haddington was called off because of a frozen pitch. At this time, we still don’t have a time and date for the rearranged fixture, but we will publish this as soon as we hear from the Championship Committee.

Talking of last Saturday, the club would like to thank everyone who attended the Calcutta Cup lunch, those who watched the matches at Goldenacre and finally all those who danced into the night at the Six Nations Party. We all had a fabulous and memorable day at Goldenacre.

Finally, we would like to thank the touring party from Barker College, Buenos Aires who played a friendly match against our U16 XV. In what was an open and entertaining match, Heriot’s were eventual winners with a 36 – 19 full time score. After the match and at half time during the Ireland v Wales match, we were given a cultural overview of Argentina by the Rugby and Hockey sides, as well as a few tasty snacks which they brought over.

We wish our new friends all the best as they continue their tour of the UK and Ireland.

Heriot’s top RBS Premier B following a 21 points to 8 victory at a cold and crisp Goldenacre yesterday. Following a morning pitch inspection, the surface was judged to be playable, making it one of only four matches to kick off in the Premier leagues.

First half tries from Jason Hill, Graham Wilson and a penalty try, all converted by Graham Wilson won us the vital league points. A spirited second half from Jed-Forest earned them a penalty for Ewan Scott and a try for Iain Chisholm to cut their deficit.

There were three yellow cards for Jed and one for Heriot’s.

Next week we’re in Cup action as we take on Haddington in a home tie, kicking off at 1:00pm to accomodate the RBS Six Nations matches. We will be showing the Calcutta Cup match live from Murrayfield, so everyone without a ticket for this is welcome to come along and watch on our big screen.
