While it was great to see Stevie Lawrie back at Goldenacre, it did nothing to assuage the disappointment of a heavy loss to city rivals Watsonians. This in spite of the fact that Heriot’s had more territory and possession, it was down to Watsons taking every opportunity handed to them and then shutting up shop when we were in position to score. A
very healthy crowd were entertained from the very start of the game with tries flowing in an absorbing and open game of rugby with both sides keen to keep the ball alive at all times – the first line out not until the 31st minute. It was the 10 minute spell around half time that did the damage with Watsonians the benefactors of some late festive cheer scoring two tries that took them 12 points clear and laid the foundation for a clear win.
There is no doubt this was a set back to our campaign as a Top 4 finish has always been the goal, however we have the opportunity to right the ship away to Boroughmuir on Saturday before facing the other 3 teams above us in the league.
We were delighted to welcome the next generation of club players to the stand pitch at Goldenacre with Heriot’s Rugby P4 and Watsonians Rugby P4 showing off their skills at half time. It was great to see the 20 boys thoroughly enjoying the experience on the big stage and a massive vote of thanks to all the parents who orchestrated the event.
The 2s unbeaten streak goes back to October and they stormed in to a 28 point lead in the first quarter against Watsons, were pegged back to 4 points before closing the game out with a 10 point win which takes them up to 4th in the league. On Saturday’s performances Phil will be looking closely to see what changes may need to be made.
