Heriot’s Rugby Club is delighted to have accepted an invitation to Serbia this summer to take part in the Belgrade Winners 7s tournament as part of the centenary celebrations being laid on by the Serbian Rugby Union.
Over the weekend of the 16-17th June Heriot’s will participate in both an Under 18 and adult tournament against teams from Romania, Poland, various local sides and the Serbian national teams in what will be a fantastic celebration of 100 years of Serbian Rugby.
This is particularly apposite to the Heriot’s community generally, due to the fact that the first game played under the Serbian flag on April 11th 1918 took place in Edinburgh with the team populated by Serbian boys who had fled the atrocities of World War 1 and were educated at George Heriot’s School.
On returning home after the war these young men established rugby and set up clubs in Serbia to the point that rugby now is a recognised main stream sport for both men and women.
Having travelled to Belgrade in 2012 we hope to repeat the successes of that tour and act as worthy ambassadors not only of Heriot’s Rugby Club but also Scottish Rugby.
Any supporters wishing to travel to Belgrade are more than welcome to come – just be aware there are no direct flights from Edinburgh.
